THE LEGAL AID BOARD EXTENDS ITS SERVICES DURING THE 16 DAYS CAMPAIGN


To commemorate the 16 Day of Non-Violence against Women and Children Campaign, the Legal Aid Board of South Africa continues to provide its tax-funded legal services to vulnerable South Africans, particularly women and children.
 
The Legal Aid Board officials will, from 25 November - 10 December 2008 (8h00 to 16h00), be on stand-by to give advice on issues of domestic violence, including child abuse, children’s rights and women abuse. This will take place at the Constitutional Hill; corner Queens and Sam Hancock/Hospital Street, Braamfontein under theme: Legal Aid Board support none Violence against Women and Children.
 
The Legal Aid Board Chief Operations Officer, Mr Jerry Makokoane reiterated the organisation’s commitment in building a just society where each person’s Constitutional rights are promoted, respected, defended, protected and fulfilled to ensure justice for all.
 
“As a progressive and independent public defender, we have a Constitutional mandate to provide quality legal assistance to those in greatest need such as women and children,” said Makokoane.  “The 16 Days of Activism is a vital campaign to the Legal Aid Board since our services are mainly directed on meeting the basic legal needs of people, particularly those who live below the poverty line, to provide them with information on their rights and available legal services to strengthen their access to justice” says Makokoane.
 
“As we observe the 16 Days of none Violence against Women and Children Campaign, South Africans are reminded that the Legal Aid Board continues to ensure that the poor and the vulnerable have access to justice in order to realise a just South Africa” concluded Makokoane.
 
Currently, the Legal Aid Board have 62 Justice Centres and 49 Satellite Offices with a total staff complement of over 1200 legal practitioners fully operational nationwide.
